The Story of the Uxbridge Horseshoe Club

The roots of the Uxbridge Historical Centre Horseshoe Club (originally the Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society Horseshoe Club) go back to 2010, when two horseshoe pits were installed beside the Nesbitt Shed at the Uxbridge Historical Centre. For several years, the pits saw only occasional use—until 2017, when Historical Society member Bob Kirvan decided to bring them to life. Promoting the idea at Heritage Day and through local newspaper ads, Bob gathered names of interested players and helped spark new excitement around this classic pastime.

In 2018, the club was officially founded by Ken Watts and Bob Kirvan. That first summer saw 32 members—men and women between the ages of 55 and 92—gathering every Tuesday evening for friendly competition. Many players were visiting the museum grounds for the first time, quickly falling in love with the beautiful setting and the sense of camaraderie the club inspired.

To meet increasing interest, plans were proposed in 2018 to build four additional pits, which are now in regular use. Today, the club plays every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. from May through October on four pitches located behind the Red Brick Schoolhouse at the museum. Membership remains strong, with 30 members in 2023 (24 men and 6 women), and continues to grow each season.

Two trophies are awarded annually to the league champions: the Ken and Irene Watts Trophy and the Kirvan Cup, honouring both the sport’s competitive spirit and the individuals who helped bring the club to life.

The club has also played a key role in expanding the Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society’s membership—from 108 in its early days to 172 by 2022. In 2023, the club welcomed 12 new members and hosted the Durham Region 55+ Horseshoe Games on June 8th. It now stands as the only horseshoe club in all of Durham Region, attracting players from nearby communities including Whitby and Pickering.

Season dues are $30, which includes a membership in the Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society. Members are invited to attend special events like the Speaker Series, beginning May 1st at 6:00 p.m. at the Red Brick Schoolhouse.

New players are always welcome—your first time is free! To learn more or to get involved, please contact Bob Kirvan at 905-852-9176.
